For sale is my Epson 5040ub and remote control. The only thing that my new 5050ub can do that the 5040ub cant is 4k/60Hz with HDR, due to a data bandwidth limitation in the chipset on the 5040ub. The 5040ub will display up to 4k/60Hz SDR and 4k/30Hz with HDR. SDR content looks fantastic, and HDR content looks even better. It will also display 1080p/60Hz with HDR for the devices that support it. Our Roku supported 1080p/60Hz with HDR with certain apps, and the PS5 will output 1080p/60Hz HDR. Since this is a pixel shifting projector that also has great image processing and upscaling, both 1080p/60Hz HDR and 4k/60Hz SDR both look great. This has the newest firmware, which adds an Auto-Bright setting for the SDR/HDR adjustment setting. For most people this would be fine. But, it does clip the whites just a little bit (basically right where SDR content would show bright white anyways). The Auto setting defaults to a darker HDR setting that does not clip the whites, but appears dark. I spent several hours creating a custom gamma curve (switching between the 4k Blu Ray and regular Blu-Ray of the same movie) so that the Cinema Bright setting will display HDR content as bright as it should be on Auto without clipping the white. So, you do get the benefit of the added bright detail of HDR. Gamma settings change based on picture mode, so I used Natural for SDR content. The bulb has 869 hours on it, but tested back to back with the 5050ub with 0 hours on its bulb, I could not tell a difference in brightness or picture quality. Besides the number of hours on the bulb, this projector is in the same condition it was the day I bought it. It was mounted on our ceiling and stayed there virtually untouched until I took it down to install the new one. If youre looking for a fantastic 4k HDR projector and will mostly be watching 4k HDR movies (24Hz), this is the projector to get. I only updated because I bought the newest gaming consoles that support HDR, and I found a deal I couldnt pass up on a 5050ub. Otherwise, Id still be happily using this projector.
